Warsaw firm to debut kids’ orthopedics

An area orthopedic company focusing specifically on the needs of children expects to roll out its first line of products by the end of the summer.

Warsaw-based OrthoPediatrics LLC’s initial products will focus on trauma, including flexible nails and plates designed specifically for a child’s bone structure, said Nick Deeter, chairman, president and chief executive officer.

OrthoPediatrics is contracting with Warsaw-based Symmetry Medical Inc. and Micropulse Inc. in Columbia City to manufacture its products, Deeter said. The company was in the Northeast Indiana Innovation Center in Fort Wayne before moving to Warsaw in January.

Fractures from trampoline accidents and other incidents are most common in the summer, Deeter said. Subsequent product lines will focus on joint reconstruction and limb preservation, such as repairing a bone after the removal of a tumor instead of amputation.

Deeter concedes that the pediatric orthopedic market is small – about $400 million in sales last year – compared with the worldwide adult orthopedic market, which sees about $28 billion in sales annually. Because of lower volumes, orthopedic manufacturing giant Zimmer Holdings Inc., which is also based in Warsaw, doesn’t produce products specifically for that market, spokesman Brad Bishop said.

Deeter sees the reluctance by larger players to get into the market as a positive for his nine-employee company. He expects to add at least five employees in operations and quality management in the next three months and six salespersons after that. Deeter projected OrthoPediatrics’ 2007 revenues to be about $3 million to $4 million.
